Napoli

The solo adventure chronicles for my journaling website begin in one of the Italian homes of the mafia, Naples. Upon reaching the train station, I was immediately struck by the stark contrast in cleanliness and lack of sense of security which, despite the since previously incessant feeling of being surrounded by pickpockets which I had accustomed to, put me at unease.

For those traveling to Naples, or Napoli as the locals call it, I would recommend staying near the harbor. I chose to stay close to the train station, which is probably the largest culprit for why I chose to move onwards to Positano. After taking a taxi to the city center of Naples, followed by a good twenty minutes of walking through dusty, dirty, crowded streets with dented cars, though filled with a vibrant atmosphere, I reached the port, where the dirty tarmac streets turned into one large street of white, polished cobblestone.

The charming port, with old monuments consisting of outlook points and an old castle along the coastline, and larger and finer hotels and restaurants with excellent rooftop views of the sea, quickly gave me a new perspective of the city. This is where the hub of tourism was.

Mesmerized by the coast line, I quickly traversed hundreds of meters of the walkway seemingly in seconds, and rapidly rolled into a restaurant by the name of Sorbillo, one of a couple by the same name in the city which founded the concept of pizza in Italy. Here, I tried the local specialty: “fried” pizza. For those who don’t know what this is, it is essentially a calzone though with a deep fried outer layer. Needless to say, it was a filling meal, where the taste of the crust reminded me of churros. The photos I have attached are just a few of the highlights of this beautiful city.
